Every RV owner knows that it takes work to keep their home-away-from-home looking great, but not everyone is familiar with how to do a roof inspection. Depending on how often you use your RV, roof inspections need to be done at least twice a year, though more regular use may require more frequent inspections.
Before getting started, you need to determine which type of roof you have: Walkable or non-walkable. If you are unsure, it’s best to assume it’s non-walkable to prevent damage to the outer shell or interior supports. If the roof is walkable, you can climb up and check for cracks and damage, but for a non-walkable roof, you’ll want to stay on your ladder.
If you notice damage, you can fix the problem yourself with a sealant or other product, but it’s always best to seek professional service if there’s a problem you’re unfamiliar with. It’s also a good idea to clear any debris you see and thoroughly clean the roof while you’re up there.
Check all roof seams, looking for cracks or hardening of the seam sealant. Look for missing sealant, which can cause leaks and damage the inside of your RV. If your roof has solar panels, an air conditioner, or other equipment, check the sealant around the base of the gear for any openings that could allow water entry.
Repairing missing or damaged sealant isn’t difficult, but it needs to be done correctly to prevent leaks. RV sealant products are available at several major retailers and online, but it’s important to note that there’s no shame in asking for help if you’re not confident in the process. A trained technician can quickly and easily identify issues and fix the problems without you ever needing to get on a ladder.
Finally, if you notice more serious physical damage, such as cracks or holes in the outer shell, it’s best to have Valley RV help with the repairs.
