How to Go on an Affordable Road Trip

Driving in the Red Rock Landscape, Southwest USA

Road-tripping is one of the best ways to get out and see the United States, but many people lose excitement after they start calculating the costs associated with going on an adventure. While it’s true that road trips can become expensive, there are plenty of ways you can save on your next RV outing, so let’s take a look at some of the things you can do to cut costs.

Set a Budget

Determine how much you can comfortably spend on a road trip, making sure that you’re able to satisfy all your other financial commitments afterward. Even if you have what you believe to be a pretty strong budget, it’s important to set and keep clear limits on different spending categories, like food and entertainment. It’s also important to calculate a rough estimate of your fuel costs to prevent surprises down the road, making sure to give wiggle room for any bumps in the road.

Time Your Travel

Holidays and the summer season are peak times for travelers, and many campsites and other destinations adjust their pricing accordingly. It can be significantly more expensive to travel during those times than others, so planning for an off-season trip or a drive during one of the “shoulder months” (April, May, September, etc.) can net big savings.

Pack as Much as Possible

Take the time to plan activities while you’re on the road, and be sure to pack what you’ll need for each stop. Buying new supplies is expensive enough, but tourist destinations are known for some of the highest prices on already-costly gear. This also includes emergency and first aid equipment, so it’s important to plan for as many scenarios as possible.

Other Savings

Depending on your destination, you may save money by picking up a National Parks Pass, which gives you admission to parks for a yearlong period. Some states offer similar programs, so it’s a good idea to do research ahead of time. You may also be eligible for loyalty programs and other savings at gas stations, campgrounds, and chain restaurants. Finally, check your credit card rewards to see if you’re eligible for fuel or lodging discounts.
