You have plenty of choices to make when buying a motorhome, but none are more important than the size. Class C Motorhomes are a bit larger than Class B units and have many of the great things people love about the larger Class A units while offering an easier-to-drive experience. In this post, we’ll dive into Class C motorhomes to detail whether they are right for you or if another size class would be best.
Class C RVs and motorhomes usually ride on a truck or van chassis and feature a cab on top of the cockpit or driver area for more sleeping space or storage. These motorhomes generally have several seatbelts, making them safe to carry more passengers, and manufacturers employ a variety of brand-name chassis from Ford, General Motors, Mercedes, and others. In some cases, you’ll find what are called Super C motorhomes, which come on heavy-duty chassis and offer greater towing and payload capacities.
Some Class C motorhomes offer toy hauler features with a rear garage or storage space for UTVs, golf carts, or motorcycles, and some have an expandable patio or deck for outdoor living. They are suitable for longer trips due to their larger interior space and living areas, and many offer multiple bathroom spaces. People often spend extended periods out on the road, and toy hauler models make it possible to park the motorhome and explore using a smaller vehicle.
Class C vehicles are suitable for camping at most campgrounds because they retain a friendly size, and most models have a solar or fuel-powered generator that gives them all the comforts of home on the road. The Class C designation means they are between 20 and 40 feet long, and some variants can be configured without slide-out sides, making it easier to find camping space.
Depending on the model and chassis, Class C motorhomes usually offer robust towing capacities because of their truck underpinnings. Some offer towing of up to 10,000 pounds or more, so you can tow your car or a recreational vehicle. Diesel models tend to deliver stronger towing numbers than gas powertrains, which often lack the same towing capabilities.
Class C motorhomes are quite easy to drive and will feel familiar to anyone who has driven a large pickup truck. They feature a user-friendly interior with many of the same fixtures from the vehicle they’re based on, and their smaller size compared to a Class A RV makes them less intimidating to maneuver in campgrounds and urban areas.
