RV Emergency Kit Essentials

When you’re packing for a road trip, it’s easy to remember things like food, clothing, and pet supplies for your RV. One thing you might not think about is an emergency kit, which can save you time and money and make your trip much safer for everyone involved. Life on the road is unpredictable, and there can be plenty of unexpected bumps, so it’s best to plan ahead and be as prepared as possible before you leave home.

What to Pack in Your RV Emergency Kit

Packing food and water is a must for a road trip, but you should also pack non-perishable items like canned goods and bottles or jugs of water in case you become stranded for a period of time. That said, non-perishable does not mean you can completely forget about the food once it’s packed. You’ll need to make sure canned items remain sealed and don’t develop bulges or dents. Keep your water supply in the darkest, coolest part of your RV and check it regularly, especially during the summer heat.

A medical supply kit is another must-have item, even if you already have a basic first-aid kit. Pack gauze, bandages, disinfectant wipes, antibiotic ointments, pain relievers, gloves, an emergency blanket, hand sanitizer, face masks, and other supplies. Many of these items are sensitive to extreme temperatures, so you’ll need to pack them carefully and check them regularly to make sure they work as expected when you need them.

It’s a good idea to pack backup grooming and hygiene supplies, including shampoo, soap, towels, dental care products, and sanitary products. If you become stranded for a while, these items will make you much more comfortable when you run out of your primary supplies.

Finally, a basic maintenance kit can help you keep your RV running smoothly and may help you get out of a tight spot when you’re far from a repair shop or service station. Jumper cables, emergency flares, tire chains, road alert triangles and high-visibility clothing, a tire pressure gauge, a portable air compressor, and tow straps might save the day if you have a maintenance issue on the road. Also, consider packing a portable generator or battery power pack, heavy-duty tape, ropes, and a fire extinguisher.
