RVs need lots of different “things” to offer their owners true home-away-from-home experiences, but that gear can also cause safety risks if not used and stored properly. Fire is a significant risk for any RVer, but there are a few things you can do to minimize the chances of a fire. Here’s a quick overview.
Memorize Important Information
It’s a good idea to make sure you know your campsite location and phone number, RV registration information, private health insurance numbers, and more. While we recommend a fireproof safe to store those documents, it’s not always possible, making it important to keep track of as many important data points as possible.
Maintain Your Gas Lines
RVs often extensively rely on propane for heat, cooking, and power, so it’s essential to regularly inspect the system and make any necessary repairs.

Have a Fire Plan
Your RV might be small, meaning you won’t need a complex map to safely get out, but it’s a good idea to have a fire escape and regrouping plan to make sure everyone gets out safely and that you can find them after the fact.
Mark the Vehicle
If you have pets or kids, it’s good to place “pet inside” or “child inside” stickers to let first responders know that there could be a rescue involved in a fire.
Use the Appropriate Appliances
Be cautious using electric heaters or aftermarket appliances not installed in your RV at the factory. This also applies to portable electric devices like hair dryers and audio systems. Review each item’s power usage and specifications to make sure they won’t overload your RV’s electrical system.

Keep Fire Extinguishers and Smoke Detectors On-Hand
Fire extinguishers need to be regularly inspected and tagged, which can usually be done at your local fire department. They will make sure the pressure valves and tank are in good shape, which will help you get the necessary fire suppression when the time comes. Smoke and CO alarms are also important and can give RVers the ability to stop problems before they start.
